Riding the Royal Enfield is an experience that will get more smiles per mile than any other motorcycle. It is simply iconic – it does what it says on the box, it’s a motorcycle for getting you around and it’s a machine that you will simply fall in love with.
In recent times, they have now modernised having an electric starter and the gear lever on the familiar left hand side. You will not find the earth-shattering performance of a modern Suzi-ump or whatever (!) but they are meticulously designed for the Indian roads and extremely good at what they do.
This was first time visiting India and I was a bit apprehensive but everything was sorted the hotels better than my expectations from the moment we met to departing the airport everything was quietly organised if you needed it.
Visiting the Royal Enfield factory in Chennai, having a cookery lesson, learning about the culture and traditions, watching a wedding, seeing working elephant, arranging a ride and even helping to give them a bath – all these things were absolutely marvellous.
Getting away from the tourist routes, winding mountain roads with wonderful scenery, stopping for a chai and a chat with the locals while watching out for the nosey monkeys and spotting temples along the way was tremendous. Riding through the vast tea and coffee plantations then on down to the coast for a dip in the ocean is not to be missed. The vibrant colours and aromatic smells of the spices lined up in hessian sacks along the street markets was intoxicating.
